Genesis 39:11-12: 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

Thessalonians 5:22: Abstain from all appearance of evil.

The word evil connotes an unpleasant occurrence, event, incident or an action taken. It most of the time if not all, leads to pain, regret or anguish. Indulgence in form of evil activities lead always to sin against man and altimately God.

Romans 13:3-4 “For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”

As human beings created in the image and likeness of God, we are of three nature,  body, spirit and soul. Hence evil activities can take place  in or all the three aspects of our being. Thank God for the grace of choice making, our memory verse for today’s study expressly urges us as children of God to exercise our God like abilities, such as control, rulership, it says abstain from all appearance of evil, that is run, flee or fly if you can.

Evil, which in other words can aptly mean sin is a destiny killer, it extinguishes vision and dreams, it is of utmost importance for all wishing you fulfill life’s mandates to detest and deal with it with all sense of responsibility and urgency. Ezekiel 11:21, But as for those whose hearts go after their detestable things and abominations, I will bring their conduct down on their heads,” declares the Lord GOD.

Earlier verses of Genesis 39 records Joseph’s understanding and view of what evil represents following potiphar’s wife’s invitation to fornication which is one sure was of enormity between man and his creator.

Genesis 39:7-9: 7 And after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.

9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”

The enemy is constantly looking loop holes to introduce evil, that is sin in order to abort the victory ahead or in view. Hence we must not be caught napping, be vigilant at all times so as to flee when the devil shows with his antics of evil both physical and spiritual. Matthew 13:25 says, “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.” Remember that you are not just of body, but also of the spirit.

Note always that the greatest danger that a man faces in the spiritual world is what happens when he sleeps, the bible admonishes us to stay in the place of prayer always in order to overcome evil. Luke 18:1, And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.

There is a constant  war between evil and good, between the kingdom of God and that of darkness, John 10:10, 10 explains this better, the thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

To enjoy the presence of God always you must flee from every thing that signifies evil because our God is a just and good God, his eyes cannot behold iniquity that is evil. Habakkuk 1:13.

The most effective way to free yourself of all form of evil is to remain steadfast in Christ as only Jesus can save. John 15:1-5. I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

As I conclude, I pray that God’s grace remains sufficient always for you to overcome evil by fleeing from anything that appears to seek enormity between you and God almighty, your creator. May you not be rewarded with the following words on the last day when men come to give account of their deeds. “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” Matthew 7:23.

At the end of it all for fleeing swiftly from that evil appearance, Joseph was elevated from prison to the second in command in the whole of Egypt. His dreams and visions were translated to reality. Evil can only prevail for a while, good will always overcome. It is like the proverbial bread of corruption that is sweet in morning, but at noon turns to gravel, Proverbs 20:17. Just imagine that!!!

Avoid it, do not pass by it; Turn away from it and pass on. Proverbs 4:15.
