Matthew 22:34-40: 34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets

Proverbs 3:27: Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.

Emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

“emotional intelligence is the key to both personal and professional success”

This is the most important aspect of positive psychology relating to skillful understanding of the role Emphaty plays in personal and professional success.

While preparing for this teaching, and searching for materials, I stumbled on an African concept that aptly explains the essence of Emotional intelligence in the purest form there could be “UBUNTU” which properly captures my title “I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE”

Ubuntu is the essence of being human. This concept speaks particularly about the fact that you can not exist as a human being in isolation. It is hinged on a our interconnectedness. Ubuntu says you can not be human all by yourself,  Ubuntu make you conscious of the fact that you are not an Island. You are deliberately generous and mindful of others.

A person with the I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE consciousness is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.”

There is a story of some African children somewhere in Kenya that some aid workers came in contact with and decided to make happy, so they put up a racing competition, promising the winner a pack of candy. What the children did thought the visitors a big lesson on emotional intelligence, they all joined their hands together winning the race together.

Emotional intelligence is premixed on success in personal and corporate life. It’s about interpersonal relationships and relatedness both in private and public life, it brings about peaceful coexistence and the common good of all mankind.

Our nation Nigeria and the world at large is what and where it is today because of  individual and corporate greed that has created a world of self conscious, self minded and insensitive beings who have forgotten that no man is an island.

Remember the biblical story of Cain and Abel? Genesis 4:1-16.

Our Lord Jesus also thought and  live vividly examplary  emotional intelligence based life while he was here on earth.

The five key principles of emotional intelligence which include self-awareness, empathy, assertiveness, optimism, and stress management clearly illustrates Jesus Christ relational expertise amongst fellow men while he was here.

What a great lesson to be learned from the story of those African children!  And what a better world it would be if there were more people with that spirit and believe of I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE.

Tremendous things come about in life when we are willing to watch out for the benefit of the entire group rather than focusing on the benefit to ourselves. From my own experience, I can testify that success has always been greatest when I focus on helping others around me to succeed. None of us exist in isolation in this world.

We are all interconnected and we all have so much value we can bring to one another’s lives if we are willing to.  Those children in Africa understood something that we as adults could all take a lesson from.

Emphaty is the summary of it all, do unto others as you want done unto you. Remember, you can only get as much as you contribute to the circle of life because, You are because I am and I am because you are.

In conclusion, emotional intelligence is about being sensitive to the fact that you are not a lonesome isolationist, you are conscious that the world does not revolve around you alone. You consider others in all your actions.

I am because WE are and, since we are, therefore I am. -John Mbiti
